Cyber Threat ADVISORY

Advisory: Protect Yourself Against the PRC/Salt Typhoon Cyber Threat

The Arkansas Cyber Defense Center (ACDC) advises all individuals and organizations to take immediate precautions following reports of cyberattacks targeting U.S. telecom networks by the State-Sponsored Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) group, Salt Typhoon. These attacks pose significant risks to personal privacy, business operations, and critical infrastructure.

Key Threat Details:

Salt Typhoon, a state-sponsored APT, has exploited vulnerabilities in U.S. telecom networks, potentially allowing hackers to eavesdrop on calls, intercept text messages, and disrupt communications. These actions compromise sensitive data and pose a serious threat to national and personal security.

Recommended Actions:

  1. Use Encrypted Communication Tools: While Android and iPhone devices are encrypted individually, communications between them are not unless secured by messaging apps with encryption. Switching to encrypted apps ensures your conversations remain private.

  2. Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Protect all accounts with MFA to prevent unauthorized access, even if your passwords are compromised.

  3. Stay Alert for Phishing Attacks: Be wary of suspicious links or requests for personal information, especially those received via email or text.

  4. Update Devices Regularly: Ensure your devices and applications have the latest security updates to mitigate vulnerabilities.

  5. Monitor Your Accounts: Regularly check for unauthorized access to your accounts or unusual activity in your communications.

Why This Matters:

Salt Typhoon’s actions highlight the growing sophistication of state-sponsored cyber threats and the need for robust security practices. By taking proactive steps, you can significantly reduce the risk of compromise and protect your personal and business data.
