Selfless collaboration is how we defeat cyberterrorism

Why did Forge Institute join a global nonprofit cybersecurity organization?

It may surprise you to learn that technology is not the primary offense or defense used to counter cyberterrorism. Technology, while useful, is just a tool. What strikes the most fear in the hearts of dark web criminals is collaboration. The exchange of information in real-time between private and public entities thwarts criminals who rely on their targets to remain insulated inside their private security silos.

Ironically, the need for public and private organizations to collaborate on cybersecurity affairs is made necessary by increased collaboration between the cyber criminal community itself. The dark web was once populated by lone malcontents seeking little more than social chaos. Today, we find these enemies to be far more organized with far more destructive agendas.

Forge Institute has become an effective conduit for promoting and establishing collaborative partnerships that are essential to our nation’s cybersecurity. In recent months, we’ve formed strategic alliances between universities, government institutions, and private cybersecurity firms to create a powerful network determined to secure our nation’s digital infrastructure. The pursuit of allying ourselves with like minded organizations is ongoing, and is assisted by a new collaboration recently formed with Nonprofit Cyber.

Nonprofit Cyber is a coalition of global nonprofit organizations formed to enhance joint action to improve cybersecurity. Forge Institute has recently become a coalition member.

All coalition members are nonprofits that serve the public interest by developing, sharing, deploying, and increasing the awareness of cybersecurity best practices, tools, standards, and services. Nonprofit Cyber is now 31 members strong.

“Cybersecurity nonprofits create and sustain essential resources that touch every enterprise and every person. And many are natural ‘integration engines,’ bringing together people and ideas across the public and private sectors, technical disciplines, industry sectors, and national borders,” said Tony Sager, Senior Vice President and Chief Evangelist for CIS, and co-chair of Nonprofit Cyber.

Mr. Sager is absolutely right when he says cyber security nonprofits are integration engines with influence and access between sectors, disciplines, sectors and borders. Organizations like Forge Institute build relationships among diverse people by sharing a common goal – to gain absolute autonomy over the cyberthreats that menaces our uniquely American quality of life.

Forge Institute joined Nonprofit Cyber to build a better world. That may sound naive to certain ears, but the sentiment is made genuine by the men and women at Forge Institute who have dedicated themselves to making cyberspace a safespace. We welcome more to join us.
